Cambridge's Freedom Well has first been proposed at Dimensions Variable, Site Fixed, an exhibit at the Cambridge Arts Council, Cambridge, Massachusetts, in November of 2005. Nineteen international artists created proposals for projects with these parameters:

"The dimensions for the proposed creation can be variable, ranging from inches to meters from two to four dimensions; but the site is fixed--Cambridge, home of the Cambridge Arts Council, known for its commissions of public work." - organizer Mary Sherman

Is This Some Kind of a Joke?

The Freedom Well in Harvard Square is a fiction created as part of an exhibition called Dimensions Variable, Site Fixed at the Cambridge Arts Council in Cambridge, Massachusetts in November, 2005. Since artists Caroline Anderson (US) and Chingiz Babayev (Azerbaijan) started this project in the summer of 2005, our global thirst for oil has become an ever-growing topic. We're not scientists! And this site can't hope to cover all related topics, but here's a start:

Urban Oil Wells Already Exist

California

West Pico (West L.A.), California /Breitburn Energy
Rosecrans and Sawtelle (West L.A.), California / Breitburn

"In early April, oil prices hit $57 per barrel. At prices that high, fields that were once deemed “uneconomic” and abandoned are becoming more enticing, including in some unexpected places — such as the heart of a city. Smaller, independent oil companies are working in urban environments — Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif., and Houston, Texas, for example — and producing, in some cases, thousands of barrels of oil a day, despite the unique challenges of the urban environment." - geotimes.org

New Mexico
"SANTA FE, NM (2001) – As urban residential and commercial development moves into existing oil and natural gas fields, a balance needs to be struck between safety and proper resource development, an Oklahoma regulator told the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC) during its annual meeting here today." - iogcc.com

Ohio

Wells in a Cleveland, Ohio golf course

"...With the price of crude oil climbing near record highs, oil companies are working overtime to find new places to drill for black gold. Soon, they will have an easier time setting up drilling equipment on fields, farms and even upscale neighbourhoods across Ohio.
In September, a new (Ohio) state law will take effect that rolls back years of local restrictions on oil and natural gas drilling in cities and townships across the state. In the past, many local governments set up lengthy reviews, and reserved the right to say no if neighbours objected, or if officials were concerned with safety and health issues." - gasandoil.com

VENDORS INTERESTED IN OIL DRILLING ON SCHOOL PROPERTY

"Superintendent Gary Zoldesy announced at last week's school board meeting that two oil drilling vendors are interested in exploring wells on school district property. He said that four new wells are already due to be drilled and he proposed that the board have a special meeting to discuss the issues involved. 'The whole area now has a chance to blossom,' Zoldesy said in reference to the increased revenue that the oil wells would produce for the district." - Published on September 29, 2005, Page 8 - Akron Beacon Journal
